Going to art school in California in the 60's strongly influenced the way I see light and color and continues to inform my flat, hard-edge painting style and my interest in simplifying and monumentalizing the commonplace. In general, the issues I am interested in are mainly formal: scale, simplification, flat forms, light and color. I usually paint from photographs because the camera allows me to capture a specific moment of light and shadow. Although I sometimes make figurative paintings most of my work is of places and things. A few years ago I started making small gouache paintings on paper in addition to my larger work in acrylics. The paintings are a result of my musing about my surroundings and my fondness for the ordinary.
